Licence - Lottery: Outline

New Gambling Laws came into force on 1 September 2007 which will regulate commercial gambling in Great Britain. The new Act introduces a new licensing regime for commercial gambling, including lotteries.

The Act is regulated by the 'Gambling Commission' or local Council, depending on what is being licensed.

The Act has three clear objectives:

  • Keeping gambling crime free
  • Making sure that gambling is fair and open
  • Protecting children and vulnerable adults

The Act covers two main activities:

  • Providing facilities for gambling
  • Using premises for gambling

In either case the appropriate permission must be obtained from the 'Gambling Commission' or this 'Licensing Authority'.

Permission may come from a licence, permit, or registration granted according to the Act, or from an exemption given by the Act.

The implementation of the Act will be undertaken by Hartlepool Borough Council, Licensing Team, or the Gambling Commission.
