A to Z of services: Open and Derelict Properties
Open and Derelict Properties: Outline
The Council has powers to deal with empty properties which are not secured against unauthorised entry or are likely to become a nuisance or threat to public health. We can arrange for properties to be secured when owners do not do so and recover the cost from them.
Please contact the Private Sector Housing Team to report empty houses.
Buildings which are considered to be 'detrimental to the amenities of the neighbourhood' can be dealt with by consulting the Building Control Section, who can serve notice on the owner to remedy the state of the building. Again, if they do not comply, Hartlepool Borough Council can then intervene.
To report an instance of a dangerous building or structure, or to get help and advice on how to make a dangerous building safe, contact Building Control.
