Planning policies - environmental issues (agenda 21): Outline
Agenda 21 is the name given to an agenda for the 21st century adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. This international forum was charged with the responsibility of producing a new and sustainable agenda for the future. Changing the way in which we all live so as to solve international problems - the depletion of the world's resources, pollution, global warming, loss of various plant and animal species - can only be achieved by the community as a whole. A philosophy based on sustainability and producing a legacy for future generations is at the heart of Agenda 21. It is our wish that the Hartlepool Borough Council should mobilise the community to achieve the goals of the Agenda insofar as they are appropriate locally and help to create a better and more sustainable world for this and future generations.
