A to Z of services: Elections - electoral register

Elections - electoral register: Outline

The Electoral Register is a record of everyone who lives within the boundaries of the local authority and who is eligible to vote at elections.

This must be kept in two versions:

  • Full - Which includes all electors, and;
  • Edited- Which only includes electors who have given permission for their details to be on the list. The edited version may be sold commercially.
A recent change to the law now means that you can add your name to the register of electors at any time throughout the year.

If you do not register then you cannot exercise your democratic right to vote in any election. It may also lead to problems obtaining credit as credit reference companies rely on the Register for background information.
