A to Z of services: Benefits (Housing and Council Tax) - Staying in Hospital

Benefits (Housing and Council Tax) - Staying in Hospital: Outline

No one likes to be in hospital longer than necessary and while in hospital, you don't want the added worry over Rent or Council Tax.

If you are in hospital, and intend to return to live at home, you can still receive Housing Benefit for up to 52 weeks. You must inform the Council if your stay is likely to exceed 52 weeks.

If you are in hospital, or know someone in hospital, who is worried about paying their rent and council tax, then contact your local Council's benefit department. Remember, if you can't make the call yourself, a friend or relative can apply on your behalf but they will need your permission and details of your finances.
