A to Z of services: Referral orders

Referral orders: Outline

A referral order is what is given to a young person who pleads guilty to an offence when it is his / her first time in court. The only exception to this is if the offence is very serious and therefore the court decides on a custodial sentence.

When a young person is given a referral order they are required to attend a youth offender panel, which is made up of two volunteers from the local community. The panel along with the parent / carer will decide a contract lasting between 3 and 12 months. The aim of the contact is to repair the harm caused by the offence and addresses the causes of the offending behaviour.
