A to Z of services: Advocacy
Advocacy: Outline
Sometimes people need help to express themselves. If you feel you need help to get your views across there are many advocacy services available that provide a confidential advice, guidance, information and representation service.
Advocacy on behalf of carers may include raising awareness of carers issues and helping to keep them on the agenda of all relevant agencies. They can help to set out the key values and principles about services that are important to carers. This can improve the quality of services for carers and make sure information is available to them.
Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA). These are specialist advocates who are provided for people who lack capacity to make major decisions, (such as moving accommodation) and have no friends or family to support them. Adult Social Care will arrange for an IMCA if they are required.
Adult Social Care can arrange for an advocate to help you, or you can contact one of the many agencies who provide advocacy yourself. For a list of agencies, or to request an advocate to help you when contacting Adult Social Care, contact The Duty Team.
