Although I am not a native of Hartlepool I have lived and worked in the town since 1966.  Educated at Bede College, Durham University, I served as a teacher in the town for 30 years before taking up a new career in school administration in 1996.  I retired from my post as Adminstration Manager in the summer of 2011.

I founded and was Musical Director of the Hartlepool Youth Choir, retiring in 2004 after 35 years.  In April 2005 I was admitted to be an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Hartlepool - something of which I am immensely proud.

I am on the board of several local organisations and charities including Hartlepool Youth Choir Parents' Association, West View Project and West View Advice and Resource Centre; a former President and Vice President of the European Federation of Choirs, Vice Chair of the British Federation of Choirs.  I am Chair of Governors at West View Primary School and a member of the Governing Body of Lynnfield Primary School.

I am married  to Maureen and have three grown up daughters Sarah, Brigid and Katy (all of whom were educated at local schools) and six grandsons.
