Q: What other advantages will Smart Cards have?
Eventually, it is intended that more functions or products will be added to smart card passes. These willinclude an 'electronic purse' function, which is a NESTI objective. This will enable small purchases to be made e.g. payment for trips made before 9.30am using ENCTS passes on weekdays in the Tees Valley . It is possible that in years ahead, library/leisure/health etc. cards and ENCTS pass functions could be combined on the same multi-use card. Smart card chips will increasingly be added to mobile phones enabling them to make 'contactless' payments by holding the phone near a reader.
