Q: Will all buses have smart ticketing systems?
Although large operators including Arriva, Go North East and Stagecoach will have 'live' smart ticketing systems by the end of 2011, operators are not required to upgrade to smart ticketing systems. However, for multi-operator tickets to be introduced, it is essential that all operators upgrade their systems. Small operators are being encouraged to upgrade under the North East Smart Ticketing Initiative (NESTI). The government is also offering operators an incentive through offering enhanced rates of Bus Service Operators Grant to bus companies that have smart ticketing systems.
