Gulley Cleansing

About the Service

Gulley Service

Routine maintenance of gullies is undertaken to ensure that the highways have adequate drainage.  The condition of the highway drainage system contributes to:

  • The safety of road users
  • The serviceability of the highway structure, and
  • The sustainability of the surrounding environment

Accumulations of water on carriageways can cause hazard to the motorist and inadequate drainage reduces the effective life of the highway.

The highway network in Hartlepool has a drainage system with 21,000 gullies, which take away surface water during adverse weather. The Gulley team carry out routine cleansing and maintenance of the gullies to ensure that the highway is adequately drained.

All gullies are cleansed at least once per year, but some gullies in areas with known issues are cleansed twice or more per year. In addition to the routine cleansing of gullies, the team also respond to customer reports and carry out repairs to non-functioning gullies.

To make a report about a blocked gully or for further information telephone Hartlepool Connect on 01429 523333.
