The Register Office on Raby Road is the home of Hartlepool's own registration service, which aims to give a first class service in respect of both the traditional and the more modern registration services.

The Registration Service is responsible for:-·
The legal registration of births, deaths and marriages occuring within the Borough of Hartlepool.

Recording Births and Deaths

Residents of Hartlepool who give birth outside the district may not register the birth in Hartlepool but may make a declaration here as to the facts of the birth and the details for the registtration which we will forward to the appropriate registration district.

Marriages and Civil Partnerships

The taking of notices of marriage and civil partnerships for people living in the Borough. These make up the legal preliminaries to all civil marriages and civil partnerships, and those marriages held in churches other than the Church of England.

Performing all the civil marriages and civil partnerships in the Borough. These may be held at the Register Office or at one of the many approved premises.

Older Birth, Death and Marriages records

The provision of certified copies of the records of births, deaths and marriages in the Borough from 1837 to date.   While the older records are sought by genealogists, copies of the more recent records are used for legal purposes such as passport applications.

Certified copies are NOT photocopies.

Recent change in requirements for passport applications and many other legal procedures require the production of a Full Birth Certificate, i.e. one with parents' names on.

Other services

Providing advice on associated matters including re-registering births, foreign marriages and applying for corrections to entries.

Citizenship Ceremonies. Once the Home Secretary has approved an application for British Citizenship the applicant must attend a ceremony at which an oath or affirmation of allegiance and loyalty must be made before the Superintendent Registrar.


Civil Ceremonies are now also available for Naming, Renewal of Vows and Committment.

The office is located very near the Town Centre on Raby Road.
