Favourite Football Players
FANS are being invited to help shape a lasting tribute to some of Hartlepool United's all-time favourite players to mark the club's forthcoming centenary season.
We would like to ask you to vote for your own particular favourite from the shortlist of 20 - and the intention is to name streets on a new housing development in the Dyke House area of town after the top six selections.
Hartlepool Council is running the poll in partnership with Hartlepool United FC and George Wimpey North Yorkshire which is building 180 new homes on a site that is currently being cleared of older terraced properties in the Dyke House area of the town.
Mayor Stuart Drummond said: "I am sure that everyone will have their own views on the best players to have turned out for Pools over the years, but we have tried to come up with a shortlist that recognises significant achievement by players.
"For example, it features players such as Watty Moore who holds the record for appearances at 472, Kenny Johnson who netted 106 times for the club and Joe Allon whose 35 goals in 1990/91 were the most ever scored by a Hartlepool player in a single season. The list also includes current players Ritchie Humphreys who has the record for the most consecutive league appearances at 234, and Micky Barron who was awarded a testimonial after years of loyal service.
"Given that the club is preparing to celebrate its 100th birthday, there couldn't be a better time to pay tribute to some of the players that have pulled on the blue and white shirt and I would like to thank Hartlepool United FC and George Wimpey North Yorkshire for their co-operation with this project."
Hartlepool United FC Chief Executive Russ Green said:"This is yet another unique venture involving the town and its football club. It also endorses the importance with which the people of Hartlepool view the club within the community. The shortlist makes very interesting reading and it's going to be hard to narrow it down to the number we need - I'm glad Dimi didn't make it because Konstantopoulos Crescent is a bit of a mouthful!"
