Who pays the bill?
Introduction
Council tax is a property tax with a personal element in that it takes into account the value of a property and the number of people aged 18 or over who live there.
The Council sets the council tax levels in March every year. The amount payable by each person is worked out based on the council tax band into which the property has been placed.
Most properties are subject to council tax. There is only one bill per dwelling whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it is owned or rented
The following pages explain how the Council decides who is responsible for payment of council tax.
