Bailiff Action

What will happen if I don't let the bailiff in or I haven't enough goods to clear the debt?

If you don't allow the Bailiff in or if he decides your goods won't clear what you owe when sold, he will tell the Council.

We may then decide to make an application for your committal to prison. This could mean you having to appear before Hartlepool Magistrates Court. They will ask you what your financial circumstances were at the time when the debt arose. They will also ask you about your current financial circumstances.

The Magistrates will then decide what you can afford to pay to clear the debt you owe. They may give you a prison sentence, which they will suspend on condition you keep to those payments.

If the Magistrates believe that you had the money to pay your council tax but refused to do so, they may send you to prison immediately.
