The Executive
About the Executive
The Council's Executive makes decisions on all the authority's functions which are not the responsibility of any other part of the authority, such as full Council, Planning and Licensing Committees for example.
The Executive (Cabinet) is made up of the Mayor and between two and nine councillors. Currently, the Mayor has appointed six councillors to his Cabinet. The Cabinet discusses and approves the major decisions of the Council and meets every two weeks, usually on a Monday morning.
The Mayor effectively holds all the main decision making powers of the Council. The Mayor delegates to each cabinet member an area of Council work, known as a "portfolio", for which they are responsible for managing and making decisions. Each 'portfolio holder' meets once each calendar month to make decisions on those executive matters delegated to them.
A record of Cabinet and Portfolio Holder meetings and the decisions made are set out in the Minutes and Decision Schedules of each meeting. These are usually published within four working days of the meeting and are open for public inspection at the Civic Centre, the Central Library and via the links below.
Details of the current executive functions and delegation scheme are set out in Part 3, Section E of the Constitution.
The current composition of cabinet and the executive portfolios can be found here.
