About Hartlepool Power Station

Hartlepool Power Station owned and run by EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd and is regulated by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).

There are other bodies and regulations that oversee the running of Nuclear Power Stations, these include:

  • International Atomic Energy Authority
  • United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority
  • Radiation Emergency Preparedness (Public Information) Regulations - REPPIR

EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd have a responsibility under REPPIR to provide 'Prior Information' to sites and businesses operating within the Emergency Planning Zone of the potential risks and the actions to be taken in the event of an 'off-site nuclear emergency' occurring at Hartlepool Power Station.  This is achieved via the distribution of an annually updated 'emergency arrangements' pack in the form of a calendar and associated information which includes:

  • Actions to be taken should an emergency occur
  • Actions to be taken should temporary evacuation be necessary
  • Instructions on the issue of Potassium Iodate Tablets
  • The effects on food, agriculture and farming
  • Returning to evacuated area(s)
  • Local radio and TV stations
  • Action checklist cards and 'at a glance' display posters
