Recycling Facts and Figures
In Britain we produce enough rubbish every day to fill Trafalgar Square right to the top of Nelsons Column
Around 60% of the rubbish that you throw in your wheelie bin can be recycled, yet we only currently recycle 11%...that means that there is plenty of room for improvement!
Here are a few facts and figures about recycling:
- The average Hartlepool family throws away 6 trees worth of paper in their wheelie bin each year.
- Each year food shops give away enough carrier bags to cover the whole of London with a layer of bags - each bag that goes to landfill will take 500 years to decay.
- We use over 6 billion glass bottles or jars each year. It would take over 3500 years to sing "six billion green bottles".
- Everyday 80 million food and drink cans end up in landfill - that's one and a half cans per person. In a year, each person could fill a bath with the contents of these cans.
- The average person throws away 74kg of organic waste each year, which is equivalent to 1077 banana skins - almost all of this could be composted.
