Recycling in Hartlepool

All households in Hartlepool receive an alternate weekly collection for their refuse and recycling.

We have provided brown wheelie bins for garden waste and white poly bags for plastic bottles and cardboard - in addition to the existing green wheelie bins and blue boxes and bags.

The scheme also involves the introduction of a new weekly collection regime - with green wheelie bins and blue boxes and bags being emptied one week, and brown bins with the white poly bags the next week.

The following items can be used to recycle:

BLUE BAG
BLUE BOX
BROWN BIN
WHITE POLY BAG

If you are unsure what day your recycling and waste will be collected then please check your Recycling and Waste Collection calendar.

Lids are now available for the Blue boxes and can be purchased at the Civic Centre at a charge of £1.50.

Residents should continue to put general domestic waste that cannot be recycled in their green wheelie bins. Waste such as dog dirt, used nappies and cooked food should be bagged before being placed in the bin.

Residents are being advised that refuse collection crews will not remove extra bags of rubbish placed next to or on top of green or brown wheelie bins. Also, green bins continually found to contain recyclable materials may not be emptied.

Assisted Collections are available for those residents who are unable to get their bins/bags to the kerbside on collection day.

Hartlepool Council carried out an extensive public consultation exercise ahead of the scheme's introduction. This included distributing two information leaflets to every home, holding question and answer drop-in sessions for residents, publicising the scheme in Hartlepool's community magazine, Hartbeat, which is distributed free to every home in the town and setting up a six-strong team of Doorsteppers to visit every home and answer residents' queries.
