Real nappies are not just the traditional Terry towelling squares and safety pins you may think they are. Today, modern reusable nappies consist of shaped, snugly fitting wraps with Velcro and popper fastenings.

There are four types of real nappies:

1. 'Shaped Nappy' - These nappies fit around your baby, just like a disposable, and are secured by velcro or poppers. They require an outer wrap, which provides a second barrier against leaks. They are quick drying and are very popular due to the variety of designs and colours you can buy the wraps in. Sizes from birth to potty are available.

2. 'All-in-Ones' - These are similar to shaped nappies as they are made to fit around your baby. The difference being that the inner cotton liner is attached to the waterproof outer cover providing just one single item. They are quite convenient but can take longer to dry after washing.

3. 'Pocketed Nappy System' - These have an inner and outer layer with a 'pocket' in the middle in which to put an absorbent pad. The absorbency of this nappy can be changed according to the type of pad you put in, ie. for extra absorbency at night or on journeys, increase the amount of padding in the pocket. Some pocketed nappies will need an extra wrap, others are combined like an all-in-one but they are relatively quick drying after a wash.

4. 'Flat Nappies' - These include Terry nappies and pre-folds. If you don't like the idea of using safety pins, these nappies can be secured with plastic fastenings and covered with a wrap. These are the cheapest nappy option and are quick drying.
