Climate Change
What is climate change?
Welcome to Hartlepool Borough Council's climate change pages. We hope that these pages will be able to answer any questions that you may have about climate change, it's potential impact on Hartlepool and how we can take action to reduce these effects.
Before we begin it is important to understand the difference between weather and climate: "weather" is the atmospheric conditions that we see on a daily or weekly basis, e.g. rain, snow, dry, windy, sunshine, etc. "Climate", however, is the long-term average of a region's weather, typically covering periods of 30 years or more. It is the changes to these long-term patterns that are worrying scientists and are prompting people across the world to take action.
We know that one of the main causes of climate change is the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The following pages will show what steps Hartlepool Borough Council is taking to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide it produces. You will also find informaton and links to help you calculate and reduce your "carbon footprint".
