Working hard to reduce carbon emissions

Hartlepool Council has been working hard to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions across all its services. Steps taken to reduce energy use include the installation of new, more energy efficient lighting at the Borough Hall and the Museum of Hartlepool.

These lights use the latest technology to give a brighter light for less energy making the buildings brighter and more attractive. Low energy street lights are reducing carbon emissions from public lighting and providing better quality light.

Solar panels have also been installed on the roof of a number of buildings, including the visitor centre at Summerhill, to contribute towards the power used in the building, whilst the purchase/lease of 3 new electric vehicles (1 Nissan Leaf car and 2 Renault Kangoo vans) cut the carbon emissions of staff journeys around the town.

These practical measures have been complemented by staff education initiatives including "Switch Off Fortnight" which highlighted the importance of actions like turning off computer monitors when staff leave their desks and switching off lights and electrical appliances when not in use.

Congratulations to Mill House Leisure Centre who have really taken the energy saving message to heart and have achieved an impressive 32% reduction in energy use over the past year - well done!

Correction to the 2011/12 refuse and recycling calendar

The refuse and recycling calendar, which is delivered to every home in Hartlepool, follows a system of alternate collections for the green bin and the brown bin.

If you live in the North area of the town and your refuse and recycling is collected on a Friday you will see that both the 30th March and 7th April collections are marked as green on your calendar. From the 7th April to the 29th June please continue to follow the alternate system (i.e. if the calendar says green please put out your brown bin, and vice versa).

All other areas and collection dates are unaffected.
