Hartlepool's Rights of Way

Where are the rights of way

Rights of way can be found in towns, villages and the countryside. Some paths may be surfaced and many are tracks across countryside owned by farmers and landowners.

Public Footpaths are not to be confused with highway footways, which are pavements to the side of the road.

The network in Hartlepool Borough includes:

  • Footpaths (84km) for use on foot only
  • Bridleways (6km) for use by horseback, pedal cycle or on foot only
  • Byways open to all traffic or BOATs (6km) for use by motor vehicles, horse and cart, horseback, pedal cycle or on foot

If you'd like to find out where the rights of way are you can find them on the Definitive Map or on Ordnance Survey's Explorer 306 and Landranger 93 maps.

Permissive access is also available, this can be on Council or private land. The Council provides access on the Hart to Haswell Walkway and Seaton Bridleway and farmers provide access through Agri-Environment schemes run by Defra. Four such schemes are at Hart Moor Farm, North Hart Farm and Amerston Hall.

Many of the routes are included in Self-Guided Walking leaflets which can be downloaded.
