The Definitive Map
The legal record of public rights of way
The map that shows all the registered Public Rights of Way is called the Definitive Map, copies of the map are held at the Central Library, Bryan Hanson House and Municipal Buildings. You can view the map during Library opening hours and by appointment at Bryan Hanson House and Municipal Buildings.
Public rights of way can be created, diverted or extinguished but all of these are legal processes. These changes are made to the 'working copy' of the Definitive Map. A Legal Event Order has to be made to change the actual Definitive Map so recent diversions will still be shown on the Map following the old route.
