Electoral Register

The electoral register (sometimes called the ‘electoral roll’) lists the names and addresses of everyone who’s registered to vote.

Get on the electoral register (or update your details)

Use the register to vote service to:

  • get on the electoral register
  • update your details (eg change your name or address)

The Electoral Register is a record of everyone who lives within the boundaries of the local authority and who is eligible to vote at elections.

This must be kept in two versions:

  • Electoral Register - Which includes all electors, and;
  • Open Register - Which only includes electors who have given permission for their details to be on the list. The open version may be sold commercially.

You can add your name to the register of electors at any time throughout the year under rolling registration regulations. If you do not register then you cannot exercise your democratic right to vote in any election. It may also lead to problems obtaining credit as credit reference companies rely on the Register for background information.

If you are from a Commonwealth country, British Overseas Territory or an EU member state you can also register.
