The Countryside Wardens regularly work with school and community groups on varied aspects of environmental education.

The wardens visit school's to talk about various subjects relating to the countryside and wildlife that can be found around Hartlepool, practical tasks such as bird box or table making may be incorporated into a series of educational sessions.

With the specialist knowledge of the countryside wardens, groups are encouraged to explore their local environment, particularly if they have a Local Nature Reserves within walking distance.

Themes that can be taught include:

  • Seasons- including colour changes, seed dispersal, hibernation, life cycles.
  • Habitats- varying habitats of Hartlepool and why particular plants and animals live here, this session could include habitat construction.
  • Ecology- a varied subject that can provide many sources of education.  Life cycles, food chains and webs, reproduction, adaptations and camouflage.

The Countryside Wardens have a series of environmental games that help children to learn through play.

Occassionally there could be the opportunity for a group of children to do some practical management of a natural habitat via the Countryside Wardens.
