Recycling bin deliveries to begin

Most of the town's 42,000 homes are to receive new bins to replace their existing white poly bags and blue bags as part of major changes to the way the Borough Council collects households' refuse and recycling.

Deliveries of the bins commence on Monday (February 25) and will last for four weeks.

In the first week, homes in Seaton Carew, Burbank, West View, Central Estate and the Headland will receive their bins.

Kate Ainger, Hartlepool Council's Environmental Projects Officer, said: "Householders don't need to be at home to receive their bins, they will be left at the front of their properties.

"If other residents in your street have got their bins but you haven't, telephone us on (01429) 523333 and we will arrange to send one out."

The refuse and recycling changes also mean that the day and time that residents' bins are emptied are likely to change as the Council implements a more efficient Tuesday-Friday collection regime,   instead of the current Monday-Friday system. This will minimise the disruption to collections that is caused by Bank Holiday Mondays.

A calendar detailing residents' exact collection dates will be attached to the new grey bins when they are delivered. This should be kept for future reference.

The new refuse and recycling arrangements are to be introduced from the start of April, with the first collections taking place on April 2. Residents are asked not to put out their new bins before this time.

Although residents' existing blue boxes will continue to be used to recycle glass bottles and jars, other recyclable materials such as cardboard, plastic, metal and paper will go in the new grey bin. Residents should still use their brown bins to recycle garden waste and they should continue to put all non-recyclable waste in their green bins.

Under the new system, residents will be required to put out their new grey bins and blue boxes together one week, and then their green and brown bins together the next.
