You and your GP
Finding A Local Doctor
Local doctors or general practitioners (GPs), provide an essential service for all local people. They are the first port of call for many people when they develop a health problem. They provide many services, such as:
· General health advice and treatment
· Vaccinations
· Contraception and maternity services
It is important to be registered with a GP as they can also help you gain access to specialist hospital and community health services if you need them.

How to Register with a GP
Everyone has the right to be registered with a GP.
If you wish to register as a new patient with a GP in Hartlepool, go to 'Practice List' under Dowloads below. This document indicates which practices currently have the capacity to accept patients.
We update this list every month.
To register, either telephone or call into the practice and ask to be registered. If they agree to add you to their list of patients, they will ask you for your details - you can either present your medical card or fill in a short form.
A doctor may refuse to register you, if for example his or her list is full, but he may not refuse to register you on the grounds of age, sex, sexual orientation, race, colour, religious beliefs, perceived economic worth or clinical condition.
If you are related to and are a household member of an existing patient, that practice have an obligation to accept you as a patient regardless of whether their list is full.
If you have tried to register at several practices and have been refused by them all, you will need to write to Tees Shared Services at the address above and ask to be allocated to a GP practice. You will then be allocated to a GP practice but you will not have any choice in which practice this will be.
It is important to note that a practice reserves the right to refuse registration to patients who may have been removed from their practice in the past because of violent conduct.
Changing your GP
You have the right to change your GP without giving a reason. The process of finding a new GP is similar to registering, as above.
