Special Educational Needs (SEN)
Introduction
This part of the Council's website is for parents, professionals and any members of the public who want to know about Special Educational Needs in Hartlepool .
You will find some information on the pages in this section and you will be able to follow links to other documents that can be downloaded.
SEN is the term most commonly used but you will also find reference to children and young people with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities (LDD). These terms are interchangeable and generally refer to the same group of young people.
In brief, children with SEN are those who have more difficulty learning than other children of the same age. This does not include children who need help solely because their first language is not English. Nor does it include children who are very gifted.
Hartlepool Council's Vision for children and young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is:
"Children and Young People with Disabilities in Hartlepool should enjoy a happy and healthy childhood, be socially included and grow up to achieve their full potential."
