Please don’t leave extra bags or cardboard next to your bin. Our collection trucks are built to empty wheeled bins only. Staff are not permitted to lift loose items into the back of the vehicle due to safety risks associated with the moving bin hoist machinery at the rear.
If you have extra waste, you can:
- Take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Burn Road
- Wait until your bin has been emptied, then put the extra bags in for the next collection
If you often have too much rubbish for your green bin, check that you’re not putting recyclable items like paper, cardboard, glass, or cans in it.
Use our Recycling Checklist to help you sort your waste correctly.
Need a Bigger Bin?
You may be eligible for a larger bin* if:
- You have six or more people in your household
- You have a medical condition that creates extra waste
*Fees apply
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Before throwing things away, consider donating to:
- Charity Collections - Local charities may collect items that are in good condition. Contact the charity directly to check availability and arrange collection.
- Freecycle - An organisation that allows you to give away or exchange items with other individuals. All items must be offered free of charge.
Please note: The above disposal options are available to Hartlepool residents ONLY - Not businesses
Other Ways to Get Rid of Extra Waste
If you still have waste that won’t fit in your bins, you can:
- Take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Burn Road
- Book a bulky waste collection (charges apply)
- Use a licensed waste carrier (check they’re registered with the Environment Agency)
Stay Legal
You are responsible for your waste—even after it leaves your home. Always use a registered waste carrier or the Council’s services to avoid fly-tipping fines.
