Change or correct a registration
Overview
A correction to a marraige, civil partnership, birth or death registration can only be made when the information is wrong. Any correction will be made in the register held at the office responsible for the area where the event occurred. Mistakes that are seen to be more than a minor mistake, such as the wrong name, or if there is more than one minor mistake, will be sent to the General Register Office (GRO).
If the event took place outside Hartlepool, please contact the register office responsible for that area. To find a register office go to GOV.UK.
Mistakes that can be corrected
Minor mistakes, such as the wrong date, location, address or occupation, can usually be corrected at your local register office.
You can:
You can change your child’s first name within 12 months of the birth being registered. You can have the change recorded in the birth register after 12 months but you will need to provide evidence that the name was changed within the 12-month period. You can only record one change to your child's first names. If there are any court orders about the naming of your child you must comply with the directions of the court.
