Do I need building regulation permission?

If you're planning to build, extend or alter a property, you may need building regulation approval.

When approval is likely to be needed

You will usually need approval for:

  • building a new property
  • extending an existing building
  • making structural alterations
  • converting a loft, garage or basement
  • installing new windows, doors or heating systems

Unsure if you need permission?

Visit the planning portal’s interactive house for guidance on common home improvement projects.

If you're working on a commercial or non-domestic building, or you're unsure whether you need approval, contact our Building Control Team for advice.
