You may be able to continue living with your foster carer after your 18th birthday, if this is what you both want, through a Staying Put arrangement.
This allows you to remain in a familiar and supportive environment while gaining the skills and confidence needed for independent living.
How it works
Before you turn 18, Staying Put will be discussed as part of your reviews.
If everyone agrees that the arrangement is right for you, you can continue to live with your foster carer after your 18th birthday.
Financial contributions
To get you ready for managing bills etc, you will be expected to contribute towards your living costs. The amount will depend on your individual circumstances.
You may also need to claim Universal Credit depending on your circumstances.
Living Together agreement
A Living Together agreement sets out:
- expectations within the household
- agreed boundaries
- responsibilities for both you and your foster carer
This is reviewed every year.
How long can Staying Put continue?
Staying Put arrangements can continue until you are 21 years old if they continue to meet everyone's needs. If you want to stay on with your carer post 21, this turns into a private agreement between yourself and your former foster carer.
