The local authority designated officer (LADO) oversees concerns, allegations or incidents involving individuals who work with children and young people. This includes roles such as:
- teachers
- childminders
- nursery workers
- police officers
- youth workers
- sports coaches
The LADO ensures that concerns are addressed impartially, safeguarding the child’s welfare while protecting individuals from unfair treatment during the process.
The LADO manages all allegations in a fair and balanced way, prioritising child safety and preventing premature judgments against individuals.
What happens if there is a concern?
-
Referral
The employer or organisation refers the concern to the LADO. -
Assessment
The LADO decides whether the allegation meets the threshold for further action. -
Coordination of response
If needed, the LADO brings together relevant agencies (e.g. employer, police) to agree on next steps. -
Monitoring the process
The LADO monitors the process to ensure it is handled fairly and efficiently.
What should you do if you have a concern?
- Report your concern to the school, organisation or employer of the individual involved. They will contact the LADO if necessary.
- If a child is at immediate risk of harm, call the police on 999.
