Council Tax charges for empty properties

Do I have to pay Council Tax on an empty property?

Yes. All properties are subject to Council Tax—even if no-one lives there. However, some empty properties may qualify for a discount or exemption, depending on the circumstances.

Common reasons for exemption include:

  • the last occupier has passed away
  • the last occupier has moved permanently into a care home
  • the property is empty because the occupier is in prison
