Council Tax discounts, exemptions and support

Discounts, exemptions and other reductions

The following are examples of discounts, exemptions and other reductions that you may qualify for.

Important: If your situation changes and you do not update your information, you may be committing Council Tax fraud, which is a criminal offence. All claims are subject to review and verification.

Single person discount

If you live alone and are aged 18 or over, you may be entitled to a 25% discount on your Council Tax.

You can get 25% off your bill if only one person lives in a property. People under 18 are not counted, but you must tell us when any person living in the property becomes 18. You can still get a reduction if they are a student, at school or an apprentice. This is known as a disregard discount. If you are applying for a single person discount because you are now the only person living in the property, please use the form on the website to tell us the names of the people who have moved out, their new address and the date they left.

Disregard discounts

Some adults may not be counted when calculating Council Tax. These people are considered ‘disregarded’, and include:

  • full-time students
  • apprentices
  • people with severe mental impairments
  • carers

If only one person is counted as resident, you may qualify for a 25% discount. If everyone in the property is disregarded, you may receive a 50% discount.

Disabled band reduction

You may qualify for a reduction in your Council Tax band if someone in your home has a permanent disability and one of the following:

  • uses a wheelchair indoors
  • needs an extra room, bathroom, or kitchen due to their disability

If approved, your Council Tax will be charged at one band lower than your current property band.

Council Tax exemptions

Some properties may be exempt from Council Tax. Common reasons include:

  • the only resident has passed away
  • the resident has moved permanently into a care home
  • the property is an unoccupied annexe
  • the property is fully occupied by full-time students
