Bio
Martin read law at university and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He has an MBA and a PhD. During his career he has spent nearly a decade working for accountancy firms (Grant Thornton and KPMG). He has spent three decades in the education sector, working in senior roles in colleges – where he has been a Finance Director and the Vice Principal of one of the country’s largest FE colleges – and a spell as a University Finance Director.
He has been the Principal at The Northern School of Art since 2008. The School delivers specialist further education courses at its Middlesbrough campus and undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Hartlepool, where the School also operates The Northern Studios, a commercial TV/film studio. The School attracts undergraduate students from around the country. During Martin’s tenure the School’s further education provision has been graded Outstanding by Ofsted three times, and its higher education has twice been awarded an overall rating of Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework.
