What we do
The Small Steps Team is part of the Educational Psychology Team. We work closely with families and early years settings to support young children with complex developmental needs.
We provide specialist advice, strategies and support for children who may have:
- significant developmental delays
- profound and multiple learning needs
- social communication and interaction difficulties
These needs may affect how a child plays, learns and interacts with others.
How we support families and settings
We visit children at home and in early years settings. By working together with families and professionals, we:
- understand each child’s unique needs
- develop personalised strategies to support progress
- celebrate every small step of development
Support is tailored to each child and may include:
- problem-solving together
- developing personalised approaches and strategies
- connecting with other professionals and support groups
- supporting transitions to new settings
- modelling play and engagement techniques
- introducing social communication opportunities
- supporting self-care skills (for example using a toilet, dressing, eating)
- using visual supports and routines
- understanding and supporting sensory needs
- celebrating successes
