Information for Residents in the 30km Outline Emergency Planning Zone

Does this apply to me?

This information is for people who live outside the Detailed Emergency Planning Zone (DEPZ) but within 30km of Hartlepool Power Station. This wider area is known as the Outline Emergency Planning Zone (OPZ).

While it is unlikely that you will need to take immediate action during a radiation emergency, it’s important to understand what might happen and how to stay informed.

What is the Outline Planning Zone?

The OPZ is a 30km circular area around Hartlepool Power Station. It exists to support emergency planning beyond the DEPZ.

  • The OPZ is part of national emergency planning arrangements.
  • It helps emergency services prepare for rare but serious incidents.
  • Protective actions in the OPZ would only be taken if the risk extended beyond the DEPZ.

How will I know if there is a radiation emergency?

If there is a radiation emergency, the emergency services will alert the public using:

  • Local TV and radio
  • Social media
  • News websites
  • Door-to-door visits (if needed)

What should I do?

If radioactive material is released, the emergency services may advise you to:

  • Stay indoors and close all windows and doors
  • Tune in to local news for updates and instructions

This helps reduce the risk of exposure through air, surfaces, or contaminated food and drink.

Only people in the DEPZ would be advised to take stable iodine tablets immediately.

Food and drink safety

If restrictions are needed, they will be announced through local media. Until then:

  • Avoid eating uncovered food from your garden
  • It is safe to drink tap water and eat covered food already in your home

Will I need to leave the area?

Evacuation is unlikely. If it becomes necessary:

  • You will be told which routes to use
  • Emergency services may visit homes directly
  • Rest Centres will be set up for those who need support

Stable iodine tablets

These are pre-issued to people in the DEPZ to reduce the body’s absorption of radioactive iodine. Stocks are available and will be distributed if needed during an emergency.

Who coordinates the response?

In the event of a radiation emergency, the response will be led by:

  • Cleveland emergency services
  • Local authorities
  • Health agencies
  • The Environment Agency
  • EDF Energy (site operator)
  • National government agencies

Stay informed
