Preparing for emergencies

Community Risk Register

The Community Risk Register identifies the key risks that are considered to be relevant to Cleveland. It also provides useful information and contact details for local services.

The register is developed by the Risk Assessment Working Group, part of Cleveland’s Local Resilience Forum. These experts assess local hazards and prioritise planning and response efforts.

The register helps to:

  • raise awareness of local risks for residents and businesses
  • support emergency planning and prioritisation

The register is reviewed and updated regularly.

How to prepare for emergencies

There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself, your family, and your community. You can:

  • use official sources (e.g. Environment Agency flood maps) to check local risks
  • keep important phone numbers with you, including family and friends
  • make sure everyone in your household knows a contact outside Hartlepool
  • create a household emergency plan and practice it
  • make sure your household or staff understand any special emergency arrangements if you live near an industrial site

What to do in an emergency

If an emergency happens and if it’s safe to do so you should:

  • go indoors
  • close all doors and windows
  • stay inside until told it’s safe to leave
  • tune in to local radio or TV for updates and instructions

You can also get updates from official sources on social media:

Please check on neighbours who may have difficulty hearing, reading, or understanding emergency messages—if it’s safe to do so.

Emergency kits

It’s a good idea to keep an emergency kit at home and at work. Your kit should include:

  • a battery-powered radio
  • a torch and spare batteries
  • a first aid kit (consider taking a first aid course)
  • any essential medication (for people and pets)
  • bottled water and food for at least 3 days
  • a tin opener
  • blankets
