Food hygiene training for food handlers
Food business operators must ensure that all food handlers are properly supervised and trained in food hygiene to prepare and handle food safely.
Do food handlers need a certificate?
Food handlers do not need a formal certificate to prepare or sell food. Skills can be gained through:
- on-the-job training
- self-study
- previous experience in food hygiene
However, it is suggested for food handlers who prepare open, high-risk foods or have supervisory responsibilities should be trained to a level equivalent to the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Foundation Certificate in Food Safety (Level 2) within three months of starting work.
Free training from the Food Standards Agency
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) offers free online training and video resources, including:
These resources cover food hygiene, allergen awareness, and safe food handling practices.
