Tips to beat smoking cravings
If you're trying to quit and struggling with cravings, try these tips:
- Breathing exercises - inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, exhale through your mouth for 5 seconds
- Write down your reasons - keep a journal to track your progress and remind yourself why you’re quitting
- Start a new hobby - distract yourself with something enjoyable like puzzles, drawing or reading
- Brush your teeth - fresh breath can reduce the urge to smoke
- Eat something sour - pickles or sugar-free sweets have been shown to reduce cravings, while preventing overeating sweet or fatty snacks
- Change your routine - avoid triggers like smoking with coffee by switching to a different drink
- Call a friend or family member - talking to someone supportive can boost your motivation
- Stay hydrated - sip cold water to keep your hands and mouth busy
- Keep active - go for a walk, clean the house or do a home workout to release feel-good hormones
