Parts of Hartlepool’s coastline are internationally recognised for their environmental importance.
Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast SPA
This Special Protection Area (SPA) covers sections of the coast and nearby land, including:
- Crimdon Dene to Hartlepool Headland
- Seaton Common
- Teesmouth
Ramsar site designation
The same area is also designated as a Ramsar site, recognising it as a wetland of international importance.
These designations:
- protect habitats for waterbirds and other wildlife
- support conservation and responsible land management
- are based on criteria set by the EU Birds Directive and the Ramsar Convention
