Ramsar sites and Special Protection Areas (SPAs)

Parts of Hartlepool’s coastline are internationally recognised for their environmental importance.

Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast SPA

This Special Protection Area (SPA) covers sections of the coast and nearby land, including:

  • Crimdon Dene to Hartlepool Headland
  • Seaton Common
  • Teesmouth

Ramsar site designation

The same area is also designated as a Ramsar site, recognising it as a wetland of international importance.

These designations:

  • protect habitats for waterbirds and other wildlife
  • support conservation and responsible land management
  • are based on criteria set by the EU Birds Directive and the Ramsar Convention
