Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are protected areas designated under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. These sites are recognised for their national importance and are protected by law.

The Council has a duty to take reasonable steps to conserve and enhance these areas.

Why SSSIs matter

SSSIs protect:

  • rare species of plants and animals
  • important geological or landform features
  • habitats of national or international significance

Some SSSIs may also be designated as:

  • Special Protection Areas (SPAs)
  • Ramsar sites
  • Special Areas of Conservation (SACs)

  • Hart Bog
  • Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast
  • Seaton Dunes and Common
  • Durham Coast
