Local and Family History

Hartlepool library members can access our large local and family history collection for Hartlepool and the surrounding areas at the Local and Family History Centre. Drop by and our friendly team can help you find what you’re looking for and support you throughout your research. You can access thousands of resources including but not limited to:

  • local history books
  • maps
  • photographs
  • electoral rolls
  • council minutes
  • parish registers
  • ephemera (records of things that exist, are used or enjoyed for only a short time)
  • newspapers
  • ward directories

Charges apply for printing. Please note that all venues are cash-only, except for Community Hub Central and Seaton Community Hub, where card payments are accepted.

Although we have a vast amount of local and family history that we keep locally in Hartlepool, we also join our three neighbouring authorities Middlesbrough, Stockton, and Redcar and Cleveland by making further records available and preserving our heritage at Teesside Archives.

Images of Hartlepool can be viewed online at Hartlepool Then and Now using the link below. The site includes photographs and information from the library and museum services alongside hundreds of previously unseen images donated by members of the public to form a very personal history of the town by its residents.
