The Preston Simpson and Sterndale Young Musicians’ Trust

The history of the Trust

The trust originated from two scholarships: the Preston Simpson Scholarship in Music and the Sterndale Scholarship for Girls.

  • The Preston Simpson Scholarship was established in 1917 to support young musicians in Hartlepool. It honours the memory of Sergeant Preston Simpson, a talented local musician who tragically lost his life in World War I at just 24 years old on 12th May 1917.
  • The Sterndale Scholarship was created in 1958 by Miss Isabel Sterndale, who wished to support young women in continuing their music education.

On 21st August 2010, these two scholarships merged to form the Preston Simpson and Sterndale Young Musicians’ Trust, which is managed by Hartlepool Borough Council.

About the Trust

The trust supports young people in Hartlepool with their musical education and aspirations. It provides financial assistance to help talented musicians overcome financial barriers and pursue their careers, contributing to the town’s vibrant arts and culture scene.

Each year, approximately £7,000 in grants is awarded to talented musicians during the annual awards concert held at Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre. During the event, recipients perform and are presented with their awards in a celebration of music and talent.
