What is Shared Lives

Shared Lives is a service which provides adults and young people, who are not able to live on their own, a safe, secure home with the love and stability that family life can offer.

People using Shared Lives are supported by Shared Lives Providers to develop or maintain independent living skills, friendships and live as part of their local community, giving them a sense of wellbeing in a safe and supportive environment.

Usually the adult or young person (aged over 16 years) finds it difficult or impossible to live independently, usually because they have:

  • A learning disability
  • Mental health needs
  • Physical disability or sensory impairment

Living with a Shared Lives Provider, means that they don't have to be in residential care or live in isolation. As a Shared Lives Provider, you can decide if you want to provide short-term, long-term or emergency care for up to three people at a given time.
