On 20 December 2024, the government announced highway maintenance funding allocations for 2025 to 2026 and beyond.
To receive 25% of the £500 million additional funding, local highway authorities must show they are meeting government criteria for best practice and continuous improvement in road maintenance.

- the Public Accounts Committee hearing
Both highlighted the need for better understanding and reporting on the condition of local roads in England.
