Business Rates Information

Business rates is the way in which business and other occupiers of commercial properties contribute towards the costs of local authority services.  If you own a business in Hartlepool you may have to pay business rates (also known as NNDR, or National Non-Domestic Rates).

Although Hartlepool Borough Council is the local billing and collection authority for business rates, the amount of business rates payable is determined annually by central government.

Under the business rates retention arrangements,Hartlepool Borough Council keeps 49% of the business rates collected, which contributes towards the cost of local services. 1% is paid over to the Cleveland Fire Authority and 50% is paid over to Central Government.
