Hackney carriage ranks are designated areas where licensed taxis can wait for passengers. These ranks allow drivers to ply for hire - meaning they can be hailed by customers directly.
How the ranks work
- customers should take the first taxi at the front of the rank.
- However, they are free to choose another vehicle if they prefer.
- When the front taxi leaves, the next vehicle should move forward to take its place.
- If a rank is full, drivers must move to another rank.
